British government’s Rwanda plan stuck in Supreme Court

The British Supreme Court announced that it considered the British government’s plan to send refugees to Rwanda illegal.

The Supreme Court, the highest judicial body in the United Kingdom, announced that it considered the UK government’s plan to send refugees to Rwanda illegal.

The statement read: “Consequently, unless and until deficiencies in the asylum processes are corrected, sending asylum seekers to Rwanda will be unlawful under section 6 of the Human Rights Act 1998.” Because this would constitute “a violation of Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which prohibits torture and inhuman or degrading treatment.”

The British Supreme Court affirmed that Rwanda is not a safe third country and stressed that it made the decision unanimously.

The British Home Office had previously announced that it would send asylum seekers arriving by boat via France to Rwanda and that their applications would be awaited there.

This decision of the British government was harshly criticized by non-governmental organizations and some of the asylum seekers took this decision to court. (AA)
