US Navy veteran Lawrence Faucette died after living with a genetically modified pig heart for 6 weeks.

Lawrence Faucette, the second patient to receive a modified pig heart transplant at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, was expected to be in good condition after surgery. Faucette, 58, who nearly died from heart disease, was claimed to have made significant progress in his recovery.

However, Faucette was only able to live with his new heart for 6 weeks. Faucette’s heart reportedly began showing the first signs of organ rejection in recent days.

Faculty Director Dr. “Faucette’s dying wish was that we make the most of what we have learned from our experiences to give others the opportunity to have a new heart when an organ cannot be found,” said Bartley Griffith.

David Bennett, who received the first pig-to-human heart transplant at the same hospital, lived for two months.
