Deported Russian journalist accused of “espionage”

The statement from the Bulgarian State Agency for National Security (DANS) states that it has been determined that Aleksandar Gatzak was collecting pro-Russian intelligence in Bulgaria.

Gatzak was also banned from entering European Union (EU) countries.

HE TAKES REFUGE IN THE EMBASSY

According to Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) news, Gatzak was determined to be spying for Russia in a way that could threaten Bulgaria’s national security. For this reason, the journalist’s accreditation was canceled in September, but although he was invited to DANS, he took refuge in the Russian Embassy in Sofia.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mariya Zaharova reacted to the decision to deport Gatzak. Zakharova stated that Russia would take action in response.

After Russia declared war on Ukraine, relations between Bulgaria and Russia entered a period of tension. Since the start of the war, Bulgaria has deported 84 Russian diplomats, declaring them “personas non grata” because they “threaten the country’s national security.” (AA)
