Azerbaijan-Armenia Summit in Iran

The foreign ministers of Iran, Turkey and Russia will meet their Azeri and Armenian counterparts in Tehran today to discuss the process of reaching a peace agreement between the two countries.

According to Iranian and Russian state media, today’s meeting will be the first between Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan following the operation launched by Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh region last month.

Iran’s state news agency IRNA, citing the Foreign Ministry, said the countries want to address regional problems “without the intervention of countries outside the region and Western countries.” This statement is believed to be a reference to the United States and the European Union (EU), whose involvement in seeking a peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan irritates Moscow.

The influence of Russia, which is considered the guarantor of security between Azerbaijan and Armenia, is believed to have weakened due to the war in Ukraine. (Reuters)
