Alarming development in the Middle East…. Will the United States, which shot down missiles, enter the war?
The downing of missiles fired from Yemen into Israel by the US Navy raised concerns about a regional war in which the US is involved in the Palestine-Israel war.
As tensions rose in the region, the United States sent an aircraft carrier to the eastern Mediterranean to protect Israel and ordered its troops to “stand ready.”
Two US officials announced that a US Navy warship operating in the Middle East detected and stopped multiple missiles fired from Yemen yesterday.
Missiles fired from Yemen toward Israel were described as a sign that the war could spread.
Pentagon spokesman Gen. Pat Ryder said the missiles were launched by Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen and said: “We can’t say for sure what these missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles were targeting at this time, but they were launched from Yemen to the north along the Red Sea, potentially toward targets in Israel.”
It is noteworthy that the incident occurred after Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said: “If Israel’s attacks continue, resistance forces will take action.” As tensions rise on the border between Israel and Lebanon, the involvement of the Houthis in Yemen and the US response have put the risk of a regional war back on the agenda.
‘IF HIZBULLAH ENTER WAR, WILL THE UNITED STATES RESPOND?’
Pentagon spokesman Ryder stressed that the latest incident sends a message that the United States will protect Israel and its allies in the region.
The American press commented that this was a sign that the war would grow to include the United States in the future. Time magazine reported that if the war between Palestine and Israel turns into a regional war, the United States could also become involved.
The news noted that if the Hezbollah organization in Lebanon and other Iranian-backed regional powers attack Israel, US President Joe Biden will have to decide to what extent he will get involved in the war.
Michael O’Hanlon of the US think tank Brookings Institution said: “If Hezbollah calls your bluff and you don’t respond, it will look like you are taking a step back,” noting that the latest incident carries big risks.
