The professor from the University of Birmingham in England gave the keynote speech at the summit. Dr. Toby Peters said providing sustainable and fair “cold chain” solutions to 500 million smallholder farmers is an important step in the fight against food security, hunger, injustice and climate change.

Peters said: “Due to the lack of a cold chain, approximately one billion people can be fed with 25 percent of vaccines, but 12 percent of all food is wasted.” saying.

Ole Nielsen, Head of UNIDO’s Montreal Protocol Unit, said: “UNIDO strives to develop refrigeration solutions with sustainable and low-cost technologies and reduce food waste with developing countries.” he said.

Nielsen stated that the Multifaceted Fund (MLF) supports the manufacturing and service sectors, but cold chain applications, also known as the installation sector, remain outside the fund’s framework.

Nielsen highlighted that reducing hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) emissions is an important factor in the fight against climate change and underlined the need to collect more data on the topic.

At the two-day summit, representatives from industry, academia and government discussed the latest technologies developed to make cold chains more sustainable and climate-friendly. (AA)
