They were captured for murdering the presidential candidate… They were found dead in prison
After the assassination of presidential candidate Villavicencio on August 9, 6 people related to his death were arrested. 6 Colombians were found dead in the Cárcel del Litoral, the largest and most overcrowded prison in the country.
In the statement issued by the National Penitentiary Agency (SNAI) it was indicated that the Colombians in question were housed in pavilion 7 of the prison. According to the guards’ report, the people found dead showed no signs of torture or injuries resulting from a struggle.
It was reported that President Guillermo Lasso, who was aware of the incident, will convene the security cabinet and request detailed information on the issue.
Presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, known for his “anti-corruption stance,” was murdered by an attacker who shot him three times in the head as he got into his car in the capital, Kito, on August 9.
Ecuador’s Attorney General had reported that the suspect who carried out the attack was shot dead during a conflict with security forces. Following the murder, security forces carried out operations against criminal organizations and arrested 13 people, 7 of whom were Colombians, who were believed to be related to the incident.
Villavicencio said he received death threats from many people, including leaders of Mexico’s “Sinaloa Cartel,” one of the international organized crime groups operating in Ecuador. (AA)
