‘Mysterious’ Oxford explosion: Fire lit up sky
An explosion occurred in the city of Oxford, located in the southeast of England. After the explosion, a large fire broke out.
People who spoke to British media said the fire occurred due to lightning in the region.
Likewise, social media users stated that lightning struck very strongly in the area and then a fire broke out.
Residents in the area reported experiencing power outages.
STATEMENT FROM THE RECYCLING COMPANY
The mystery surrounding the explosion on social media ended with the statement from the recycling company Severn Trent Green Power, which has a facility in the region.
In a statement on Facebook, the company confirmed the explosion and fire.
According to the company, lightning struck a tank used in the recycling process and caused an explosion when the biogas inside ignited.
The company statement is as follows:
“Severn Trent Green Power reports that at around 7.20pm this afternoon, a digester tank at its Cassington AD site near Yarnton, Oxfordshire, was struck by lightning, causing biogas within the tank to ignite. “We are working with the emergency services to ensure the safety of the site and will provide further comment in due course.”
The British police also made a statement: “The fire is believed to have occurred due to lightning striking gas containers in the area in adverse weather conditions.”
Police said they had not yet received information about any injuries and that medical teams were in the area.
