Scientists warned: the city is collapsing

Study: Some parts of New York are sinking faster

It was determined that some parts of New York, dominated by skyscrapers, collapsed faster.

In research conducted by scientists at NASA Jet Propulsion and Rutgers University, it was revealed that New York City collapses 1.6 millimeters each year. It was highlighted that in the metropolitan area of the city where the United States Open Tennis Tournament is held, the courts of Arthur Ashe Stadium and LaGuardia Airport were the parts that collapsed the most between 2016 and 2023, with Arthur Ashe Stadium 3 collapsing, 7 millimeters every year. and the LaGuardia runways collapsed 4.6 millimeters.

It was stated that the collapse in these places may be due to the fact that the areas where they were built were landfill.

While a 3.2 millimeter collapse was detected on Interstate 78, the southern part of Governors Island, Midland and South Beach on Staten Island and the Arverne district were also claimed to have collapsed faster.

The researchers noted that the risk of city collapse has worsened due to rising sea water levels, and explained that protecting people and properties in the coastal zone from coastal flooding is an increasingly difficult situation for New York.

Research by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in May indicated that 1 million buildings in the skyscraper-dominated city weighed 764 million tons and that New York was collapsing by 1 to 2 millimeters each year. (AA)
