He was on the run for years… The famous mafia boss died

Matteo Messina Denaro, leader of Cosa Nostra in Sicily, one of the largest mafia organizations in the world, who was captured earlier this year after 30 years on the run, has died.

Denaro, one of the world’s most famous mafia bosses, was caught in a private clinic in Palermo, the capital of Sicily, in January. The capture of Denaro in the clinic where he went due to his illness, after years on the run, generated worldwide repercussions.

The capture of Denaro, who was among “the 10 most notorious criminals in the world” wanted by the FBI for years, was described as “a great victory for our country” by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

IT WAS THE SUBJECT OF FILMS

Denaro was sentenced to life in prison in absentia for the 1992 murders of anti-Mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino. He was also wanted as the perpetrator of the bomb attacks in Florence, Rome and Milan in 1993.

Cosa Nostra, also known as the first established mafia organization in the world, has been the subject of many films and television series. Denaro, who was a member of one of the leading Sicilian mafia families and began murdering him at a young age, was thought to be responsible for the deaths of at least 50 people.

The ANSA news agency announced that Denaro, 61, who was suffering from cancer, died in the hospital to which he was transferred after his condition worsened in recent days. Denaro, who was hospitalized in a high-security prison, allegedly refused aggressive treatment and fell into a coma.

According to the Italian press, Denaro, known as “The Last Father of Italy”, refused to reveal secrets about the organization to the police after being captured. It was revealed that the mafia boss had been receiving colon cancer treatment for a long time under false names.
