Immigrant crisis grows: Train services are stopped

A Mexican railway company suspended train services in the north of the country because many migrants were injured and died trying to board moving freight trains.

In the statement issued yesterday by the Ferromex company it is stated that some immigrants waiting at train stations boarded moving freight cars “despite the serious danger.” The statement said approximately 1,500 people gathered at a train station in the city of Torreón, in the northern border state of Coahuila, and approximately 800 immigrants were waiting to board trains at cargo depots in Irapuato.

INTERNATIONAL TRADE WILL BE AFFECTED

The statement indicated that approximately 1,000 people boarded freight cars on the train line that connects the city of Chihuahua with the northern border city of Ciudad Juárez, and that after many deaths and injuries that occurred in recent days, the services of 60 freight trains were temporarily stopped “to protect the physical safety of migrants” and the problem was resolved. It was emphasized that the authorities should take action.

International trade is expected to be affected due to the suspension of services by Ferromex, Mexico’s largest railway operator.

Many irregular immigrants, who leave Central American countries in search of a better life due to problems such as violence, unemployment and poverty in their countries, are trying to reach the United States through Guatemala and Mexico. (AA)
