The population aged 80 and over in Japan is at its highest level in recent years
Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications updated population data for people aged 65 to 80 or older living in the country.
According to new data; The population aged 80 and over residing in the country increased by 270 thousand compared to last year, reaching 12.5 million. Thus, the population aged 80 and over reached its highest level ever recorded, exceeding 10 percent of Japan’s total population. One in 10 people in the country were 80 years old or older.
According to the data, the population aged 65 and over decreased by 10 thousand compared to last year, falling to 36.2 million. The ratio of the population aged 65 and over to Japan’s total population was 29.1 percent. The proportion of the population aged 65 and over in Japan has fallen for the first time since 1950.
In addition, of the 36.2 million inhabitants aged 65 and over, 15.7 million were men and 20.5 million were women.
According to the data, Japan’s population has been updated to 124.6 million. While Japan ranks first in the world in terms of population aged 65 and over, known as the “elderly”, Italy ranks second with 24.5 percent and Finland third with 23.6 percent.
According to the National Institute of Population and Social Security Studies (IPSS), by 2040, the proportion of people aged 65 and over in the general population will exceed 35 percent. (AA)
