Dozens arrested in Mahsa Amini protests in Iran
On the first anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death in Iran, security forces detained more than 260 people to prevent possible demonstrations.
The Shark newspaper, known for its closeness to reformists, wrote that many people were detained in several cities on September 16, the anniversary of Amini’s death. Most of the arrests took place in West Azerbaijan province. The West Azerbaijan Police Command announced that 137 people were detained.
97 people were arrested in Isfahan province and 16 in Kurdistan province. While 10 people were detained in several cities, no statement was made on how many people were detained in the capital Tehran and Sistan-Balochistan province.
Mahsa Amini, 22, who fell ill and was hospitalized after being detained by guidance patrols known as “morality police” on September 13, 2022 in Tehran, capital of Iran, died on September 16.
Approximately 500 protesters died and more than a hundred police officers lost their lives in the months-long protests. (AA)
