The Greek team that went to help Libya died in an accident
Five people from the Greek rescue team lost their lives last night in a traffic accident when the team was transporting humanitarian aid from Greece to Libya, which was experiencing flooding.
Greek President Katerina Sakelaropulu said: “I am deeply saddened by the loss of lives of three Armed Forces personnel and two citizens who were in Libya with the Greek humanitarian aid team.”
Greek Prime Minister Kiryakos Mitsotakis also shared a post on social media and said: “Unfortunately, we mourn the loss of five members of the Greek team as a result of a tragic accident.” In its statement, the General Staff announced that three members of the Greek Armed Forces lost their lives as a result of the bus carrying the Greek team colliding with a vehicle coming from the opposite direction for an undetermined reason.
According to Greek state television ERT, two translators affiliated with the Greek Foreign Ministry also lost their lives in the accident.
3 days of mourning were declared in the Greek Armed Forces.
On the other hand, Greece has not yet made any official statement about the injured. The Greek press reported that 13 wounded, 5 of them seriously, from a team of 19 people were transported to Greece on a military plane.
Osman Abdulcelil, health minister of the House-appointed government in eastern Libya, made a statement to the press after the accident and said that the Greek aid team, which arrived in Benghazi to support search and rescue efforts in Derna and then headed to Derna, where he suffered a traffic accident on the Al-Bayda road, he said.
