‘333 million children in the world are mired in extreme poverty’
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reported that 333 million children, approximately 1 in 6 of the world’s child population, live in extreme poverty.
UNICEF and the World Bank published the report entitled “Children living in poverty according to the international hunger line”, which they jointly prepared. The report noted that the number of children living below the $2.15 per day limit and considered in “extreme poverty” decreased 13 percent from 2013 to 2022, from 383 million to 333 million, noting that If this pace continues, the goal of ending child poverty by 2030 will not be achieved.
The report noted that the sub-Saharan Africa region bears the greatest burden of child poverty and stated that 40 percent of the world’s “extremely poor” children are found in this region.
The report also noted that the child poverty rate in this region, which was 54.8 percent in 2013, increased to 71.1 percent in 2022. (BRITISH AUTOMOBILE CLUB)
