Minister resigns after apparent murder
An incident that took place in the Greek port city of Piraeus and was captured moment by moment by security cameras continues to create a shocking impact on the country’s agenda…
Last week, a fight between a passenger who took the scheduled ferry at the last minute and officers of the ship preparing to leave the port of Piraeus for Heraklion ended in a tragic death.
The two crew members, who pushed the passenger who wanted to board the boat and caused him to fall into the sea, then observed the incident and the boat captain also took action. While the captain and crew were arrested after these images, a notable event occurred today.
Greece’s Maritime Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis announced his resignation. Greek government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said Varvitsiotis will be replaced by Christos Stylianidis.
After the death of the 36-year-old Greek passenger named Antonis Karyotis was revealed, Varvitsiotis said he was shocked and viewed the murder with fear and sadness. But Varvitsiotis later said: “Today people are saddened by this unjust death, but also today people trying to make a living are accused of murder. And those people are also upset,” he stated.
The minister’s words provoked a great reaction. Although the minister denied the accusations, claiming that his words were distorted, he today announced his resignation.
