Abaya ban approved in France

Abaya ban approved in France

In France, the Council of State rejected the appeal against the decision of the Ministry of Education that prohibited the abaya in schools.

The high court reasoned that the prohibition did not violate the “right to respect for private life, worship and education, as well as the principle against discrimination.”

In the decision of the Council of State, the students abaya He claimed that the male students wore the long dress called kamis for a religious reason and used it for that purpose.

The court noted that the legislation prohibits students from wearing a symbol or clothing indicating their religious affiliation in schools.

The decision to ban the abaya was submitted to the Council of State by the ADM Association, considering it contrary to fundamental freedoms.

Controversial ban in FRANCE

Education Minister Gabriel Attal announced on August 27 that long abaya and entari-style dresses would not be allowed in schools as contrary to secularism.

Government spokesman Olivier Veran said the abaya and similar long dresses, the wearing of which will be banned in the country’s schools on August 28, are an “offensive political tool”.

Attal announced on August 31 that from the new academic year, abayas worn by girls will be banned, as well as gowns worn by boys.

French President Emmanuel Macron has declared that they will not compromise on a ban on students wearing abayas in schools.

French President Macron said the ban on the abaya, considered “anti-Islamic” by some circles and which has caused controversy because it restricts fundamental freedoms, is not intended to “label” anyone.

Macron stated that he lives with a minority of French society that “defies the republic and secularism” and “abuses religion”, and that this sometimes has “very bad” results.

Macron said he was willing to test the “uniform” dress code in schools. (AA)
