Depleted uranium decision heightens tensions

The US Defense Department’s decision to provide depleted uranium shells as part of new defense aid to Ukraine has heightened tensions between the US and Russia.

In a Pentagon statement it was reported that the shells will be used in Abrams tanks.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, reacting to the US decision to send uranium munitions to Ukraine, said: “Responsibility for the consequences of the use of depleted uranium bullets will lie entirely with the United States.” Peskov called this “a very bad event” and stressed that these munitions were actively used in Yugoslavia in the past and led to very sad results, recorded even by international organizations.

Noting that the use of these ammunition increased the number of people who previously suffered from oncology and other diseases, Peskov said that these problems were also felt by the following generations of people in the regions where the ammunition was used. (AA)
