Jailed for rape in vain: DNA evidence revealed

Leonard Mack, 72, who was jailed for more than 7 years on rape charges in the United States, was found not guilty after 47 years as a result of DNA evidence.

According to the BBC report, Mack, who was convicted of rape in 1976, underwent various DNA tests as part of the Westchester District Attorney’s Sentence Review Unit’s Innocence Project, which aims to exonerate people. unfairly convicted.

Mack, who spent more than 7 years in prison for the alleged crime, was acquitted 47 years later as a result of DNA evidence.

It was claimed to be the longest wrongful conviction in US history, thanks to DNA evidence.

Evidence revealed that the real perpetrator was another person convicted of robbery and rape, which occurred weeks after the incident.

District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah said in a statement: “This decision to drop the charge confirms that wrongful convictions not only harm their partners but also make us all less safe.”

According to the Innocence Project, the leading cause of wrongful convictions, as in the Mack case, is false witness testimony.

“The state’s decision to continue to prosecute rather than reopen the investigation demonstrates its narrow view and the role racial bias plays in its legal system,” said Susan Friedman, the project’s lead attorney.

Mack, who has been wrongly convicted for years, said in a statement that he did not lose a day of hope that he would be proven innocent.

“Now the truth is out, I can breathe, I’m finally free,” Mack said. (AA)
