He asked the world for help… News after the coup

Coup plotters free ex-leader in Gabon

The release of President Ali Bongo, detained at his residence after the August 30 coup in Gabon, was announced.

The military administration, called the “Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions” (CTRI), declared that Bongo is now “free to act as he pleases” given his state of health. CTRI noted that Bongo can also travel abroad for treatment if he wants to.

The Economic Community of Central African States (ECACS) had held talks with the military government for the release of Bongo. It is claimed that Bongo could travel to Morocco, where he was treated for a long time when he suffered a stroke in 2018.

On the other hand, according to local media reports, Abdou Abarry, Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations for Central Africa, also visited Bongo at his residence. Abarry made a brief press appearance alongside Bongo. Thus, Bongo was seen for the first time since August 30.

Father Omar Bongo was first elected president in 1967, and when he died in 2009, his son Ali Bongo was in his seat. The Bongo family ruled Gabon for 56 years. (AA)
