Ennahda leaders detained in Tunisia

Munzir al Venisi, vice president of the Ennahda Movement, one of the main opposition political parties, and Abdulkerim al Haruni, president of the Shura Council, were arrested in Tunis.

The Ennahda Movement announced on its social networking site that Vice President Munsir al-Venisi was detained by security forces on Tuesday afternoon and taken to an unknown location. The Ennahda Movement that demands the release of Vice President Venisi indicated that it stands in full solidarity with Venisi.

Abdulkerim al-Haruni, chairman of the Movement’s Shura Council, is among those detained.

Riyad al-Shuaybi, political adviser to Ennahda Movement leader Rashid al-Gannushi, shared on his social media account: “Abdulkarim al-Haruni, Chairman of the Shura Council of the Ennahda Movement, has been detained.” he used his statements. Although Shuaybi did not mention the reasons for Haruni’s detention, he shared the information that Venisi, who had been previously detained, will be detained for 48 hours by the Electronic Crime Subdivision.

Another former Ennahda member and former Tunisian Prime Minister, Hammadi al-Jibali, was arrested yesterday morning by security forces at his home in Sousse, south of the capital, Tunis, and was released by the prosecution after a seven hour interrogation.

The leader of the movement and former president of the Tunisian Parliament, Rashid al-Gannouchi, was arrested on April 17 accused of “leading the people towards civil war” and detained after a 48-hour police interrogation. Ghannouchi’s detention continues.

Regarding the arrests, President Kays Said stated that the arrests of politicians were carried out due to measures aimed at “conspiring against state security” and fueling the economic crisis. (AA)
