Tension rises after the coup… They will send soldiers
In Burkina Faso, the government approved a bill allowing troops to be sent to Niger.
In a statement from the Ministry of Defense, it was announced that the Government, in the Council of Ministers, had accepted the bill that would allow the deployment of troops in Niger in the face of a possible military intervention by the Economic Community of West African States. (ECOWAS). For the bill to become law, it must be approved by parliament.
ECOWAS, which strongly opposed military administration in Niger, first announced on 10 August that it would intervene militarily in Niger if constitutional order was not restored to the country.
At the meeting of the chiefs of staff of the ECOWAS countries in Accra, the capital of Ghana, on August 17, it was reported that the date of the military intervention in Niger was clear. ECOWAS stated that the soldiers were ready to intervene as soon as the order came, but did not share information on when this possible operation would begin.
SUPPORT FROM TWO COUNTRIES TO NIGER
Burkina Faso and Mali, where the military administrations are in command, stated in a joint statement that they were on the side of Niger against the military operation that ECOWAS planned to launch to change the course of the coup in Niger.
The statement warned that any military intervention against Niger would amount to waging war against Burkina Faso and Mali. The two countries had sent “Super Tucano” type fighter jets to Niger in case of military intervention.
Niger also gave Burkina Faso and Mali permission to enter its territory in the event of a possible operation. (AA)
