The era of coups in Africa
In recent years there have been numerous coups in Africa, which came to the fore with military interventions after the army announced that it had seized power in Gabon.
After the disputed elections in Gabon, Sudan, Chad, Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger announced that the army had taken power.
Omar al-Bashir, who seized command of the state in a 1989 coup in Sudan, was ousted by a military intervention in April 2019. Stability has yet to be achieved in the country, which has been dragged into war civilian after the coup.
In Burkina Faso, which has witnessed numerous military coups since its independence in 1960, the army seized power in September 2020, citing the security situation in the country, and Captain Ibrahim Traore became the country’s leader.
The coup in Sudan ended the 30-year rule of Omar al-Bashir.
The junta, which came to power in Mali in August 2020 with the ouster of Ibrahim Baubacar Keita, staged another coup in May 2021 when the civilian wing of the transition process wanted to exclude key soldiers from the cabinet.
82-YEAR-OLD LEADER FAILED IN GUINEA
In Mali’s neighbor Guinea, the fact that ousted leader Alpha Conde became a presidential candidate for a third term by amending the constitution was the beginning of the process that led to a coup in the country. Although Conde, 82, managed to rise to power by being elected for the third time in October 2020 in Guinea, where the average age is 18, his power did not turn out as he imagined.
On September 6, 2021, Conde was overthrown by Lieutenant Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, whom he personally named head of the elite team he formed in 2018.
After the coup in Niger, discussions broke out about Russia’s influence in Africa.
THE NIGER COUP CREATED A GREAT DISCUSSION
In Niger, President Mohammad Bazum, who won the 2021 elections, was ousted in a coup on July 26 by a military group calling itself the “National Council for the Protection of the Fatherland.”
Finally, in Gabon, after the controversial elections held over the weekend, a group of soldiers announced that they were taking them to power, that the elections were canceled and the country’s borders were closed.
2019 COUP ATTEMPT FAILED IN GABON
There was also a 2019 coup attempt in Gabon, the latest stop in the series of coups in Africa.
In Gabon, considered one of Africa’s stable countries, some soldiers led by Lieutenant Kelly Ondo Obiang read a statement on national radio on January 7, 2019, while President Ali Bongo was abroad. The rebel soldiers were captured by the Gabonese National Gendarmerie Response Unit. (AA)
