Another coup in an African country: there was a coup in Gabon

Gabon, a Central African country, got involved… A group of the country’s high-ranking military announced on the Gabon 24 television channel that the administration had been taken over.

After Gabonese President Ali Bongo won his third term, it was claimed in a statement that the administration had been seized.

The high-ranking military, who made statements on television in the morning, announced that the administration had been taken over. This announcement came after the electoral board announced the third term of President Ali Bongo, with his victory.

Eyewitnesses who spoke to the British news agency Reuters reported that shots were heard in the capital, Libreville. The Gabonese government did not comment on the matter.

Speaking to television, the Gabonese soldier said: “On behalf of the Gabonese people, we have decided to end the current regime in order to maintain peace.” Dozens of soldiers behind him watched in silence as the Gabonese soldier read the statement.

THE EIGHTH HIT OF THIS YEAR

The statement also states that the government, the Senate, Parliament, the Constitutional Court and the electoral committee were dissolved. The military presented itself as the “Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions.”

If this coup is successful, it will be the eighth coup in West and Central Africa since 2020. Military coups have previously taken place in Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Chad and Niger.
