ECOWAS mediator: Nobody wants to go to war in Niger

General Abubakar, one of the former presidents of Nigeria, leader of the mediation delegation sent by ECOWAS to find a solution to the political crisis in Niger, gave an interview to the BBC about their meetings. Abubakar stated that his visit to Niger is good for diplomacy.

Abubakar stressed that no one wants to go to war in Niger, saying: “Everyone knows the results of the war. We saw what happened in Iraq, Syria and, most recently, in the Ukraine. There are other methods that can be applied in such matters (to return to constitutional order). War is not necessary.” he used his statements.

Abubakar said that they also met President Mohammad Bazum during the visit and raised many complaints about their treatment.

“SANCTIONS KEEP THE COUNTRY TOUGH”

Abubakar stated that the sanctions imposed by ECOWAS on Niger “hit the country hard”, “border crossings, power cuts and some other measures. I think that you are[solicitudes]they force them to sit down and discuss.” saying.

Expressing that he submitted a report on his visits to the ECOWAS mandate chair, Abubakar said the chair will also consult with his colleagues and then they will make a decision.

The ECOWAS mediation delegation headed by General Abubakar met separately with the military administration and President Mohammed Bazum on August 19 in the Niger capital, Niamey.

COUP IN NIGER

President Mohammad Bazum in Niger was detained by elements of the Presidential Guard Regiment on July 26, and that afternoon the soldier announced that he had seized power.

General Abdurrahmane Tchiani, commander of the Presidential Guard Regiment, became head of the transitional government called CNSP on July 28.

The CNSP appointed Lamine Zeine prime minister on August 7 and announced the 21-member cabinet on August 10, made up of soldiers and civilians. (AA)
