Appeal to Syria from the United Nations

The general and humanitarian situation in Syria was discussed at the UN Security Council. Briefing member states here, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Syria Geir Pedersen noted that the political process in Syria is “blocked” and that it will not be possible for the country to improve its economic situation as long as the conflict continues. .

Pedersen also stressed that while the conflict continues, problems such as the displaced, the detained, the disappeared and kidnapped, human rights violations and terrorism cannot be resolved.

Stating that it is vitally important for the UN and its partners to continue their cross-border assistance, Pedersen stated that in this context, the UN’s operational independence and continued communication with all parties.

Pedersen said: “We must redouble our efforts at this time when funding is dwindling like never before.” He called for the humanitarian aid plan for Syria to be funded at just 25 percent, while the regional refugee and resistance fund was funded at just 10 percent. (AA)
