Concern about military intervention in Africa grows: rejection of the transition plan

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) rejected the 3-year transitional government plan of the military government, which took power in Niger on July 26.

Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, said in an interview with the BBC that the 3-year transition plan of Abdurrahmane Tchiani, the leader of the transitional government called the National Council for Homeland Protection (CNSP) in Niger, is unacceptable. Noting that Tchiani’s proposal is just a “smokescreen” for dialogue and diplomacy, Musah said: “ECOWAS does not accept a protracted transition in the region again. They just need to be ready to hand over (power) as soon as possible.” saying.

Musah said the sooner the military returns rule to civilians and concentrates on its core responsibilities, such as defending Niger’s territorial integrity, the better.

Abdurrahmane Tchiani, in his address to the nation on August 19, announced that the transition to civilian rule would be completed in 3 years maximum. (AA)
