Fine of 885 thousand TL from Russia to Google

Big fine from Russia to Google

A Russian court has fined US technology company Google 3 million rubles (approximately 885,000 TL) for failing to remove content that Russia says was misleading about the war in Ukraine.

A Moscow court found Google guilty of failing to remove the content, stating that the content in question was “limited information.” YouTube content shared details about how to access some protected facilities and spread misleading information about Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine, the Russian news agency TASS reported.

Russia has intensified its efforts to control Internet content after the invasion, which began in Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Reddit was fined for the first time in the country on Tuesday for “failing to remove bad content.” Earlier this month, similar sanctions were imposed on Apple and Wikipedia.

GOOGLE REDUCES ITS OPERATIONS IN RUSSIA

Google has faced heavy fines before in Russia. Last year, he was again fined 360 million euros for not removing certain information about the war in Ukraine.

The company recently decided to reduce its activities in Russia within the scope of Western sanctions. Google’s Russian arm filed for bankruptcy last year, arguing that its activities in the country had been made impossible by Moscow’s measures.
