Monsoon rains hit the country! 60 thousand people were displaced
Lay Shwe Zin Oo, an official with Myanmar’s Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Settlements, said a total of 60,000 people were displaced due to the floods, with 20,000 of them returning to their homes.
Lay said that 40,000 displaced people are currently housed in relatively solid buildings such as monasteries, Buddhist temples and schools. Explaining that 5 people, including 4 children, lost their lives due to the floods, Lay said that 3 of them were from Mon State and a mother and her child were from Arakan.
“HARD TO SAY IF IT WAS THE WORST”
Lay said that the situation in Kayin and Mon, one of Myanmar’s southern states, is critical due to heavy rains and rising water levels, he noted.
Stating that the situation caused by flooding is getting worse, Lay said, “As the rainy season has not ended yet, it is hard to say whether the current flood situation is the worst this year.” saying.
Myanmar’s official government newspaper, Myanma Alinn, announced that schools were closed in flood-affected areas.
Severe weather events are observed in the country every year during the monsoon season.
