Assad’s statement on meeting with Erdogan: he did not like Erdogan’s conditions
While some steps have been taken regarding normalization efforts on the Ankara-Damascus line in recent weeks, there have also been allegations that President Erdogan and Syrian President Bashar Assad could meet.
While the parties have yet to confirm a meeting, a remarkable statement came today from Syrian leader Assad. “The meeting cannot be on Erdogan’s terms,” Assad said in an interview with Sky News Arabia.
In his earlier remarks, Assad had suggested the withdrawal of Turkish troops from northern Syria as a precondition for his meeting with Erdogan. In his most recent remarks, President Erdoğan said: “Right now, Assad in Syria wants Turkey to leave northern Syria. There can be no such thing. We are fighting terrorism there” and he noted that he was against Assad’s demand.
