Forest fire in Italy
Forest fires in the southern regions of the country negatively affect everyday life.
According to the news from the Italian agency ANSA, on the island of Sicily, which is the place most affected by the fires, 86 large and small fires are being fought.
The fire, which started yesterday in the surroundings of the Palermo airport on the island, spread to a wide area at night. Two charred bodies were found in the area of the fire.
Palermo airport, which was closed to air traffic overnight due to the fire, was reopened for limited flights at noon.
In addition, approximately 1,500 people were evacuated from the area due to the fire near the Palermo airport.
The Cervelló Hospital was left under smoke as the flames spread to the city of Palermo, while some 200 people in one part of the hospital were evacuated.
The ancient Greek-era Segesta Archaeological Park on the island was also engulfed in flames.
1 FOREST WORKER AND 2 FIREFIGHTERS INJURED
In Sicily, where ground and aerial firefighting activities continue, 1 forestry worker and 2 firefighters who intervened in the fires were injured.
The president of the Regional Government of Sicily, Renato Schifani, also reflected in the press that he asked the central government in Rome to declare a state of emergency to combat the damage caused by the fires that affected the island.
A 98-year-old bedridden person died in the fire near his home in the town of Cardeto in Calabria, another region where fires continued.
Additionally, an 88-year-old woman with a high fever died because medical teams were unable to reach her since the fires.
Thus, the number of deaths due to direct and indirect effects of the fires increased to 4.
There are currently around 80 fires, large and small, in the Calabria region.
In the Puglia region, in the southeast of the country, about 2,000 tourists from 3 hotels in the region were evacuated due to the forest fire near the city of Vieste, on the Adriatic coast.
While firefighting activities continue in the southern regions, high temperatures and wind make these efforts difficult.
NORTH ITALY SURRENDER TO THE STORM
The Lombardy and Veneto regions in the north of the country are battling hail and storms.
The Lombardy Regional Government is preparing to request the central government to declare a state of emergency due to the storm which has so far destroyed many trees and road signs, damaged buildings and vehicles, and caused the death of two people.
In Milan, the capital of the Lombardy Region, trees felled by the heavy storm closed some of the city center roads to transport, while some streets were flooded by the rains.
In the Veneto region, it was reflected in the press that the electrical network was damaged in the strong storm and 8 thousand people could not be supplied with electricity. (AA)
