He insulted Erdogan… ‘Comedian’ confused the country

German comedian Jan Böhmermann, who wrote a poem insulting President Erdoğan in 2016 and brought tensions between Germany and Turkey to the point of tension, once again confounded German politics…

Böhmermann, who made remarks about the possibility of German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) chairman Friedrich Merz forming an alliance with the far-right AfD, accused the CDU leader and his party of being “Nazis”. “Don’t worry, the Nazis with additives will probably do business with the Nazis only at the municipal level,” Böhmermann said.

Böhmermann’s statement received a great reaction from the CDU… Karin Prien, who is Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister of Education, said: “These statements are disgusting and unacceptable. It is absurd to call things Nazis that are politically inappropriate for you. Comments like this divide society and work for the Nazis,” she said.

While the German newspaper Bild reported that the CDU reacted to Böhmermann’s words, many users on social media also reacted to the German comedian’s words.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The court made a remarkable decision on German comedian Jan Böhmermann’s controversial poem about President Erdoğan. The Hamburg State Court ruled that the insulting parts of the poem remain prohibited.

The Hamburg State Court ruled that the “sexual and insulting parts” of the poem that German comedian Jan Böhmernann read about President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on ZDF’s Neo Magazin Royale satirical show last March should be banned.

In the court’s decision, it was stated that the controversial parts of the poem did not fall within the realm of ‘freedom of thought’. However, the court rejected President Erdogan’s request to ban the entire poem.

Therefore, the court upheld the injunction decision issued in May 2016. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, through his lawyer in Germany, requested a ban on the entire poem in his application to the German judiciary.
