US statement after Russia sent nuclear weapons to Belarus
According to the CNN report, senior DIA officials made statements to a group of journalists on the subject.
The officials said there was no reason to doubt Putin’s remarks about deploying tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus and that they “had some success” in shipping the weapons.
HARD TO TRACK WEAPONS
The officials, who did not explain their reasoning for why they thought so, conceded that it is difficult for US intelligence to track weapons, even with satellite imagery.
Senior DIA officials stated that the President of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, does not believe that he has any control over the weapons, most likely Russia controls them completely.
“RUSSIA WILL CONTROL”
The officials said they do not believe the transport of tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus will change the global nuclear landscape or increase the nuclear risk because the weapons would be stored in warehouses and controlled by Russian forces.
US officials described Russia’s decision to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus as “irresponsible” but said there was no reason to change its nuclear positions and no indication that Russia was preparing to use nuclear weapons. (AA)
