Thousands of dissidents march to Jerusalem in Israel
Thousands of people who oppose judicial regulation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition in Israel are preparing to complete their march from Tel Aviv to West Jerusalem.
The Netanyahu government announced that the bill that will remove Supreme Court control over the government within the scope of judicial regulation will be submitted to Parliament on July 24 for the second and third ballots. Protest groups opposed to this, on the other hand, accelerated demonstrations and civil disobedience. An anti-government group of Israelis launched the nearly 60 kilometer march from Tel Aviv to West Jerusalem on July 18.
Thousands of people, including Israelis of all ages, march in the morning, take a break in the afternoon, and continue their protests into the night due to the high temperatures. The group is expected to arrive and camp in the park near the Israel Assembly in West Jerusalem tonight.
Asmat Meron, one of the protesters who took part in the march, said: “I can’t give up democracy, I can’t give up Israel, I can’t stay home. Walking in the sun, leaving my children at home, getting up early in the morning is hard, but I have no choice. It is a mission and a vision,” he said.
Senior officials from Israel’s politics, military, security, economy and judiciary spoke out against government judicial regulation. The Netanyahu government’s protest movement against judicial regulation has been going on for about 7 months. (AA)
