People on the streets of Kenya: conflicts escalate

Protests held in response to the law providing for tax increases in Kenya continued on the third day.

Police and protesters clashed in demonstrations launched by the opposition coalition Azimio in the capital Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu, which lasted for 3 days. Arresting many people, the police intervened with tear gas against those blocking the roads.

While it was claimed that 6 people lost their lives in the demonstrations, the Kenyan police denied the allegations.

ARREST OF OPPOSIBLE LEADERS

It was claimed that one of the opposition leaders, Windshield Wiper Party Chairman Kalonzo Musyoka, was placed under house arrest and that the leader of the Azimio coalition, Raila Odinga, was prevented from participating in the demonstrations.

According to the Manufacturers Association, the country’s economy lost $20.1 million per day due to the 3-day demonstrations across the country.

Opponents of the government-enacted law, which contemplates tax increases, but which the Constitutional Court stopped executing over objections, want to end the cost of living. (AA)
