The much-discussed law in France

In France, deputies discussed the bill known as the ‘Justice Law’ in the General Assembly of the National Assembly, which envisions granting broad powers to law enforcement.

The bill was approved with 388 votes in favor against 111 votes against.

Article 3 of the bill allows police and gendarmerie to secretly obtain location information with audio and video recordings from suspects’ digital devices in cases such as terrorism and organized crime. This article does not cover parliamentarians, judges, lawyers, doctors and journalists.

WHAT DOES THE BILL COVER?

Some articles of the bill, which expands the scope of nightly home searches for serious crimes and allows the government to extend the period of preliminary investigations under certain conditions, allow remote intervention in the digital devices of suspects, can be implemented by decision of a judge. .

The bill, which makes it possible to monitor the location of devices in ‘suspicious cases in which 10 years in prison are expected’, was approved by the Senate, which constitutes the other wing of the French Parliament, on June 13.

The bill has been criticized by activists on the grounds that it could be used against them.

In order for the two houses of parliament to reach an agreement on the text of the joint bill, a joint commission made up of 7 senators and 7 deputies will discuss the bill. AA
