According to Xi, China must continue to manage, operate and provide access to the Internet as long as it complies with the law, said a statement to policymakers attending a cybersecurity summit in Beijing. “We have to respect the way the party wants the Internet to work for the people,” Xi said.

Over the past decade, China under Xi has made safeguarding Internet security a priority. This supervision covers all subjects from politics and economics to the environment and cyberspace.

Security law

In 2015, China passed a national security law so that cyberspace could also be monitored. A year later, a law was added to make it easier for the Chinese government to carry out “security checks,” requiring data to be stored on servers in China.

In 2021, China began regulating its so-called critical information infrastructure. This year, policymakers revised anti-espionage laws to include the distribution of national security intelligence, broadening the definition of espionage.
