Global warming affects women more than men

While various disasters occur in many parts of the world as a result of climate change, not everyone is equally competent to combat these disasters. The gender inequality to which women and girls, considered to be the most vulnerable group, are exposed also affects their ability to cope with disasters.

In several reports published by the United Nations Organization for Women (UN Women), it is stated that women and girls are more likely to be affected by the consequences of global warming than men in many cases. Among the many reasons underlying this situation, women’s role in society and households, being physically more sensitive than men, needing more cleanliness due to biological differences, and inadequate access to resources stand out.

In the reports of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), which deals with the role of women in society in various parts of the world and their participation in business life, it is highlighted that women make 75% of the unpaid work around the world. world.

In the reports, where it is stated that women are unable to participate in business life as a result of spending more time in those jobs for which they are not paid, and that especially girls are left behind in education, it is pointed out that people in this group does not have the financial resources to face the situation in case of a disaster.

In the studies of the World Health Organization (WHO), which evaluate the consequences of the climate crisis on women’s health, it is highlighted that women’s need for water is greater due to their biological characteristics, and that it is not they can provide personal hygiene due to insufficient water, especially during menstruation periods, during, before and after childbirth, and which are more affected by infectious-based diseases.

THE NUMBER OF WOMEN DEATHS MORE THAN MEN

In a joint study by academics from the University of Texas Austin, the University of Minnesota and Arizona State University in the US, it was highlighted that migration has accelerated due to the climate crisis. Women in regions affected by disasters such as droughts and floods are reported to have to care for their children, have difficulty traveling long distances, and are unable to leave the region. (AA)
