The UN refuses to condemn the actions of burning the Holy Quran
As the 53rd regular session of the Human Rights Council continued in Geneva, an emergency special session was held at the convening of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
The OIC resolution on the recent disrespect and attacks on the Quran was discussed in the 47-member Council.
In the draft resolution presented by the OCI; A call was made to condemn the attacks on the Qur’an and it was described as “hatred against religion”.
BELGIUM VOTE
The draft resolution, which was submitted to the emergency session held to address attacks on the Qur’an, was voted on by Belgium, which spoke on behalf of the EU.
In their pre-vote statements, some EU member states, as well as the US and UK, declared that they would vote “no” on the bill to condemn provocations of burning the Holy Quran.
Given the length of the speeches of some countries, the Council decided to meet again tomorrow and vote on the bill condemning the OIC.
Türkiye CONDEMNS THE ATTACKS ON THE KORAN
Deputy Foreign Minister Yasin Ekrem Serim, while attending the emergency session via video message, condemned the recent attacks on the Quran.
On the other hand, the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Jordan, Egypt, Indonesia and Iran and the Minister of State for International Cooperation of Qatar also made remarks at the session via video message.
The recent attacks on the Qur’an were condemned by the UN Secretary General and the Pope.
Decisions made in the 47-member UN Human Rights Council are not binding, but the opinion emanating from it affects the possible decisions that national parliaments must take. Furthermore, these decisions are important in terms of shaping international public opinion. (AA)
