Syria Russian decision: Vetoed
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) voted on the draft resolution that contemplates the extension of the aid mechanism to Syria from Brazil and Switzerland for another 9 months.
RUSSIA SAID ‘NO’
Although the bill received 13 “yes” votes and 1 “abstention” in the 15-member United Nations Security Council, it could not be passed with a “no” vote from permanent member Russia.
Many of the members of the United Nations Security Council who spoke after the vote described Russia’s decision as “disappointing” and said that failure to provide the necessary help to the Syrian people would expose the people of the northwest of the country to famine
Russia, which vetoed the resolution, has a separate draft resolution on the mechanism.
The draft presented by Russia calls for an extension of the mechanism for 6 months and includes some elements that the Syrian administration takes care of.
SYRIA AID FACILITY
According to the draft resolution adopted by the United Nations Security Council in 2014, international aid is sent from the Cilvegözü border gate to the northwestern regions of Syria.
Aid, usually in the form of food and medicine, is said to have reached approximately 4 million people.
With the latest decision taken on January 10, the mandate of the aid mechanism was extended until July 10. The mechanism’s mandate expired last night. (AA)
