According to NDTV News, the state government’s report to the Chief Justice included a comprehensive assessment of the violence that began with the argument that the Meitei community was not included in the category of “Registered Tribe (ST)”.

The report indicated that 142 people have lost their lives due to the violence that has been experienced in the state of Manipur since May, while the Indian police detained 6,745 people for these events.

The report said there have been around 5,000 violent incidents, including arson, since May, with the highest number of deaths occurring in the East and West Imphal regions.

Hundreds of houses were destroyed and tens of thousands of people were displaced in the state, where social unrest continued.

India’s Home Ministry set up a committee to investigate the violence on June 1.

Internet blackouts and curfews continue to be implemented in the state.

In India, the “Scheduled Tribe (ST)” category provides communities with opportunities such as political representation, school fees and civil service.

The Meitei, who are not allowed by law to settle in mountainous areas, say they face difficulties due to the growing population of migrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh in the state. (AA)
