F-16 and Sweden meeting between Erdogan and Biden

President Erdogan met with US President Biden

According to the statement from the Directorate of Communications, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and US President Joe Biden spoke by phone.

The meeting discussed Ukraine’s position in NATO, Sweden’s NATO membership, the handover of the F-16s and the process of Turkey’s full EU membership. During the meeting, Erdoğan stated that supporters of the PKK/PYD/YPG terrorist organization in Sweden continue to freely hold demonstrations extolling terrorism, which nullifies the measures taken.

During his meeting with US President Biden, President Erdoğan pointed out that it is not correct to associate Turkey’s F-16 request with Sweden’s membership. Erdogan also said in his meeting with Biden that they want to revive the process of full membership of the European Union.

President Erdoğan told Biden that they wanted top EU countries and leaders to give a clear and strong message of support for Turkey’s membership at the Vilnius Summit.

BIDEN’S Türkiye STATEMENT

US President Biden made remarks to CNN’s Fareed Zakaria. Referring to relations with Turkey in the interview, Biden also mentioned Sweden’s application for NATO membership and said that he believed that this country would join the Alliance as soon as possible.

Noting the demand for F-16 modernization by Turkey and Greece, Biden said: “Turkey wants F-16 modernization. Also, the Greek Prime Minister (Kiryakos Mitsotakis) is asking for help. I’m trying to form a consortium that, frankly, strengthened Turkey and Greece in terms of military capability and accepted Sweden into NATO. However, this process is not over yet.” he said.
