USA: We will meet with Russia for WSJ reporter

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan stated that they are in contact with Russia for the release of Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reporter Evan Gershkovic, who is imprisoned in Russia.

In a press conference at the White House, Sullivan said that yesterday marked the 100th day of Gershkovic’s arrest. Stating that he received information from Gershkovic’s family lawyers about the trial process, Sullivan confirmed Kremlin statements that there may be a possible prisoner swap, but that these negotiations must take place out of the public eye.

“I don’t want to give anyone false hope,” Sullivan said. The Kremlin’s statements are correct. There are ongoing negotiations. However, no clear path to a solution has yet emerged from these talks,” he said.

Moscow’s Lefortovo District Court ordered last month to extend Gershkovic’s detention until August 30. Gershkovic, who denied the accusations against him, objected to the decision to prolong his detention.

Gershkovic could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted of espionage. (AA)
