French authorities have admitted that some features of social media platforms were restricted after protests broke out across the country after the 17-year-old was killed by a police bullet on June 27.

“During recent events, we have imposed an obligation on some social media platforms to restrict certain functions for a while,” government spokesman Olivier Veran said in a live broadcast on French television channel LCI.

Veran said one of them is the Snap Map app, which is integrated with the SnapChat platform, which is used by protesters to let each other know where they are.

Stating that the developer of this app is a French startup, Veran said: “We cannot be indifferent to this.” saying.

On the other hand, it was claimed that the owner of Twitter, Elon Musk, imposed some restrictions on the platform around the world during the rush hour of the hectic demonstrations in France, at the request of the Paris administration.

MACRON DEFENDED THE INTERRUPTION

After the 17-year-old was killed by police, Macron met the mayors of the cities where the protests took place on July 4 at the Élysée Palace, saying in his speech: “We must be in a position to regulate or cut off access (to social media) when things get out of control.”

These statements by the French president provoked a reaction from the opposition.
