Critical day in BioNTech case: appears in court for the first time
The lawsuit filed against the coronavirus epidemic, which caused the death of millions of people around the world, due to the side effects of the vaccine developed by the German BioNTech and the American company Pfizer, called Comirnaty, officially began today in Germany.
THEY WANT 150 THOUSAND EUROS
A woman who said the vaccine developed by BioNTech, founded by Turkish scientists Özlem Türeci and Uğur Şahin, had side effects, launched the lawsuit in Hamburg with a claim for at least 150,000 euros in compensation for “previously unexplained side effects.”
The woman, whose name has not been released, announced that she was working with the law firm Rogert & Ulbrich.
In accordance with German law, the woman, who did not reveal her name, claimed she was exposed to side effects including weakness, insomnia and chest pain.
Dietmar Scherer, one of those who sued BioNTech, appeared in Rottweil state court today.
BioNTech, on the other hand, stated that drugs and vaccines have side effects and these have been scientifically announced before, stressing that these side effects are in the package inserts.
It is estimated that around 1.5 billion people worldwide have the Comirnaty vaccine, while this number is 64 million in Germany.
WHO WILL PAY THE COMPENSATION?
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced that Comirnaty, developed by BioNTech, is safe. It is not yet known which party will pay compensation if BioNTech is found guilty.
This is how Dietmar Scherer and his lawyer, Joachim Ceasar-Preller, were photographed at the Rottweil court. It was learned that Scherer also filed a claim for compensation for the side effect of Covid-19.
It has been suggested that the governments of the member states of the European Union are among the possible options to pay compensation because the European Union buys vaccines in bulk from BioNTech/Pfizer. However, the exact situation in this regard is still unclear.
While the German law firm Rogert & Ulbrich announced that it has 250 clients suing for damages due to the side effects of the Covid-19 vaccine, another German company, Caesar-Preller, announced that it will defend the rights of 100 clients.
