Ukrainian writer Victoria Amelina killed in Russian attack

Victoria Amelina, one of Ukraine’s best-loved writers, died on Tuesday from injuries sustained in a rocket attack on a pizzeria in Kramatorsk, Russia.

According to the news reported by the Turkish BBC, the award-winning young writer, who also conducts investigations into war crimes, became the 13th person to lose his life in the attack. “The doctors did their best to save his life, but his wounds were very deep,” said the Ukrainian branch of the PEN writers’ association.

The city of Kramatorsk is under Ukrainian control but is very close to the Russian-occupied areas. Amelina, 37, was dining with Colombian writers and journalists at one of the city’s popular restaurants, Ria Lounge.

About 60 people were injured in the attack. Human rights defenders view the attack as a war crime.
