A far-right AfD politician elected mayor for the first time in Germany
AfD candidate Hannes Loth won the elections in Raguhn-Jessnitz, a small town in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, making it the first time that an AfD politician has been elected mayor.
Loth received 51 percent of the vote in the election, where there were approximately 8,000 voters and the turnout rate was 61 percent.
It was claimed that Loth was also a member of the State of Saxony-Anhalt.
Robert Sesselmann, the first AfD governor in Germany, also won the election last week in the Thuringian town of Sonneberg.
In polls, the AfD’s share of the vote in Germany is around 20 percent.
The state structure of the AfD is classified by the Thuringian State Department for the Protection of the Constitution as “definitely far-right”, while the Federal Organization for the Protection of the Constitution classifies it as a “suspicious case”. (AA)
