Sisi’s controversial crazy project: Egypt is building its new capital
In Egypt, the government has accelerated work on the “new capital” project, which has been long on the agenda and has been controversial.
According to Egyptian media, President Abdel Fattah Sisi’s plan to establish a new capital in the desert outside Cairo is no longer just a dream and is slowly becoming a reality. It has been reported that 14 ministries and nearly 30,000 government officials in the country are working hard for the “New Administrative Capital” plan.
Some government institutions have started moving to the new capital, which is planned to be built in the middle of the desert 50 kilometers east of Cairo. Although 80 percent of the first phase of the “Second Sisi Republic” was delayed due to backlash, preparations have gained a lot of momentum recently.
IT CAN LEAD THE COUNTRY TO BANKRUPTCY
The construction of the city, whose name has not yet been determined, but which is expected to cost 45,000 million dollars, in which the Egyptian economy is in crisis, also provokes reactions. While some economists have said the plan could plunge the country into bankruptcy, civil servants moving into new offices outside Cairo complain that they go to work at two hours each morning.
In the new capital, which will be built in an area of 700 square kilometers, the deployment of especially military institutions is expected. The city, designed with modern architecture, will also be the symbol of the power of the military government in Egypt.
Construction work in the new capital has recently gained momentum.
In the center of the new capital, a People’s Square with marble floors will be installed, where the tallest flagpole in the world will be raised. On both sides of the square will be the Egyptian Parliament and the government building.
Next to the square will be built the Great Mosque with capacity for 107 thousand people, the Presidential Palace and the Ministry of Defense.
The city, where most construction workers work, is also intended to ease the burden on Cairo, one of the world’s most populous cities, and lower housing prices.

‘MEGA PROJECTS MAY BE THE END OF THE FOG’
Known for his crazy projects, Sisi’s plan to establish an alternative shipping route to the Suez Canal besides the “new capital” also creates a lot of controversy in the country.
The Egyptian leader wants to increase his support with megaprojects ahead of next year’s presidential elections. For some, it is very difficult for the government to complete the project for economic reasons, and Sisi’s gigantic project may ultimately be the end of his power.
