USA: Burning of the Holy Quran in Sweden is disrespectful and hurtful…
Vedant Patel, deputy spokesman for the US State Department, was asked about the burning of the Koran in Sweden at the daily press conference.
“We have repeatedly said that the burning of religious texts is disrespectful and hurtful, and that anything that could be legal is absolutely inappropriate,” Patel told Swedish government and local law enforcement for further comment on the incident.
Patel stated that they continue to encourage Hungary and Turkey to ratify the accession protocol without delay regarding Sweden’s admission to NATO membership.
KORAN ATTACK IN SWEDEN
In Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, Salwan Momika, of Iraqi origin, burned the Koran under police protection in front of the Stockholm Mosque.
In a written statement, the Swedish police announced that they allowed the demonstration to burn a copy of the Holy Quran in front of the Stockholm Mosque on Medborgarplatsen, simultaneously with the first day of Eid al-Adha.
The provocative action received a great reaction around the world.
HIGH JURISDICTION HAS PROHIBITED THE POLICE
In February in Sweden, Salwan Momika, of Iraqi origin, wanted to burn the Koran in front of the Stockholm Embassy in Iraq and Chris Makoundout, of African origin, wanted to burn the Quran in front of the Stockholm Embassy in Turkey. The police did not allow these provocations for security reasons.
Momika and Makoundout took the police decision to court.
The Swedish Administrative Court, on the other hand, annulled the police decision on April 4, arguing that “concerns about security risks” were not enough to limit the right to demonstrate. The Stockholm police then took the decision to the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court approved this decision of the Administrative Court and lifted the police’s “Ban on burning Quran” on June 12. (AA)
