Bloody operation against the ELN guerrilla organization in Colombia
It was reported that 6 people were killed in the operation carried out by the Colombian army against the National Liberation Army (ELN).
The Colombian Armed Forces carried out an operation against members of the ELN in a rural area of the Administrative Region of Arauca. In his statement about the operation, Defense Minister Iván Velasques recalled that the ceasefire decreed with the ELN has not yet entered into force and pointed out that 6 people died in the confrontation, 2 of them women.
Velasques pointed out that the soldiers have fulfilled their duty and that the army will continue its operations until President Gustavo Petro signs the ceasefire decree.
Eliécer Herlinto Chamorro (Antonio García), one of the high command of the ELN, reacted to the operation in a message he shared on Telegram, assuring that the country’s extreme right was trying to prevent the bilateral ceasefire and cooperating with the Army. Arguing that they acted simultaneously with paramilitary groups for the liquidation of the ELN, Chamorro said that they will not cease their armed actions.
The third round of negotiations, which began in Cuba between the Colombian government and the armed rebel organization ELN, ended with the signing of the “6-month temporary ceasefire agreement.” It was reported that the 180-day temporary ceasefire between the parties will be implemented from August 3.
